Bozeman Climbing Team

Our mission on the Bozeman Climbing Team is to instill in each athlete a healthy, lifelong passion for the sport of climbing. We strive to foster a growth mindset in each climber by upholding the values of perseverance, learning, and collaboration.

Whether the goal is to excel in competitions or achieve a personal best, we provide a safe, fun, and structured environment for each athlete to push their limits and pursue continuous growth, on and off the wall.

  • The Bozeman Climbing Team requires all athletes to have prior experience in a climbing class or on a team and/or a recommendation from a coach. All BCT athletes are expected to demonstrate motivation to improve and a willingness to receive and apply feedback from coaches.

We expect all BCT athletes to be respectful to coaches, teammates, and other climbers and to be positive and courteous members of their team and the larger climbing community, both inside and outside of practice.

BCT athletes are also expected to actively contribute to the team’s shared mission of improvement by demonstrating focused and engaged participation at every practice, and by arriving to practice on time, mentally and physically prepared to try their hardest.

  • All teams focus on bouldering September through January, and then Sport/Speed climbing February through the end of May. For athletes who participate in the USA Youth Climbing competition circuits, these seasons may be extended if they qualify for Divisional and/or National championships.

No practices are held on Bozeman Public School Holidays or Breaks. However, practices will be held on all PIR days.

  • Athletes typically begin climbing in our Youth Programs before joining our Recreation Teams. Once athletes develop physical and technical aptitude and demonstrate an innate desire to continue improving, they join our Advanced or Competition Teams. This trajectory may not always be the case as an athlete’s motivation and development can be nonlinear.

BCT coaches monitor each athlete in our program to determine what team will best serve individual athletes in each unique season of their climbing journey. It is our goal to place athletes on the teams that best fit their personal goals and developmental needs.

About the Growth Mindset

As you’ll read in the team mission and athlete requirements, the growth mindset is the foundation upon which BCT coaching and team culture at large is established. A growth mindset prioritizes the value of the learning process over accomplishments and awards. It invites athletes to seek out challenges that will help teach them new skills in the never-ending pursuit of mastery. The basic belief of the growth mindset that the BCT program aims to instill in its athletes is that skills can be honed with hard work, patience, and perseverance. With the growth mindset, there is no such thing as failure—there is only learning, which is success.
